I am here, Harriet Ann Jacobs.
I saw God's care in my struggles, and this helped me greatly when
I laid down my burden of mortal life.
What I encountered here was beyond my wildest hopes. I saw all
the evil the slaveholders did come right back to them, and I knew
that God is just and fair.
Harriet Ann Jacobs (1813-1897) was an American slave who,
after many trials, became free. She published in 1861 an account
of her experiences, called Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl
Written by Herself.
